ADHD Tips
- Focus on problem solving
- Background noise
- Clear the clutter around students
- Chop up tasks into step. Things are overwhelming so perhaps create an outline for students to follow to get through a large project. If old enough have them cut it up!
- Name Drop - "flashing" the name of a friends that is the students cheerleaders makes them feel better. Allow students to decorate things with pictures of friends and family or some kind of visual with these people.
Things not to say to students with anxiety
- "Just do it!" - worsens anxiety, students need steps in-between to ease their phobia.
- "There is nothing to be afraid of" - unless you are also afraid of the thing the student is then don't pretend to
- Quoting statistics - fears/phobias are not logical so statistics are useless
- "Don't sweat the small stuff" - you cannot decide what is "small" or what is "big" and doing so passes unnecessary judgements
- "Everything is going to be fine" - this is dismissive and it causes the student to feel that they can no longer talk about their feelings.
- "You think you have it bad, well let me tell you..." - just to make yourself feel better and makes the student feel bad for expressing themselves about a problem.
- "You look nervous" - doesn't help obviously
- ""Don't be a downer" - don't make students feel bad for not wanting to do something you deem as fun. It leads to self-esteem issues!
- "Is there something wrong with you?" - ruins self-confidence, makes students realize they are not acting how someone expect them to.
Learning is like Being in a Plane!
- Put away all electronically devices!
- Stay in seats while "taking off"
- Once things are steady, everyone knows what is going on you are free to move about the cabin!

- Student Centered Activities.
- BRISKLY (active, fast, energetic), NO Down-Time
- Enhancing and enrichment actives READY for students that finish early!
Teaching Expectations
- Model model model!
- Praise and reinforce their good behaviors
- NON-VERBAL to redirect
- Eye contact and name dropping. "Notice _____ that the cell is uni-cellular"
- Circulate room, proximity is great!
- Use "I" messages! I expect you to ________. I need you to ______
- Addressing your concerns while avoiding conflict is often achieved through the use of humor.
- IGNORE ATTENTION SEEKING BEHAVIOR
Assignment Binders Kept at School!
Instead of letting students take things home and stuff them in their desk you can have them make in in-class assignment binder.
You let them record the due-date in multiple places and then when the due date comes you just go to their binders and take it out!
Don't have to remind or ask and this way you can give 0's! No more excuses that lost it or anything. Can grade them right in their. Don't have to hand them back, students just go to their binder.
Students will have a list of due dates in the front and then you can check off when you have seen it.
Can give students feedback and put back in assignments (clean/clear) and then can re-do i you don't like it! And you don't' remind them of this either! Just put it in. They can have a place where they put redo assignments in there or a post-it or some system where they let you know to check for the redo in the binder. Never remind or anything. Just put new copy, put in redo date, and check when that time comes, if it is not redone then they do not get a new grade. (Make sure that you wait for the end of the due date or wait until the student tells you in some way they are done so you are not grading half done or not checked work!)

Choice Board
Put assignments up on a board for students to choice from.
Can color coat them by subject
Can order them by priority.
Can number them and give students a list of the ones they should do by number.
OR! put the assignments on cards and give students the cards that they need to do! CUTE!

Rules/Responsibilities
Haves students go over the grade they are in and what they are capable of doing and getting now.
There should be equal part responsibilities and benefits.

Facilitate Teaching
- students play active role in giving input, delving into learning, reflecting on the meaning of what learning and assessing quality of their efforts
- Role of Teacher - to facilitate students efforts and progress.
- EXAMPLE: tell student something is right, they examine, and come up with own rules that fit
- EXAMPLE: strategy 0 Cooperative Learning leads to teamwork, will to cooperate, social skills, support 4 basic principles; Positive Interdependence, Individual Accountability, Equal Participation and Simultaneous Interaction.
- Good for all age levels and most subjects
- Noisy, students enjoy, students need to play various roles in their group
No-Lose Conflict Resolution
- Avoid gloating and pouting
- find solution that allows both parties to win
- participants identify several possible solutions to their disagreement, select 1 that both agree on, try it, see if it works . If NOT, try again, new solution.

Assignment
GIANT assignment board.
Student job to fill these in.
Put the worksheets/etc. near this for students to get if they do not have it.
Students have there names on it in a list and the assignments are across the top and when they are done they get a check. If they want a fake name they can have one...

Beginning of School
Explain how to treat others and expectations of others and how it affects people.
Morning Invites
Invite students to the "day" and tell them what they will be learning about, what they should bring etc.
Behavior tips
- Say "disappointed". DONT OVERUSE THOUGH!
- Get students to do things for one another- combine behavior rewards so that they work together
- "Uninvite" Invite students somewhere and uninvited them when they are "bad"
- Magic Wand- Talk about "magical" miss and tap them with magic wand
- The kid that needs to move = the messenger!
- "FAIR IS EVERYONE GETTING WHAT THEY WANT"
Mistaken Goals of Misbehavior
Attention
Power
Revenge
Inadequacy
- Ignore
- give positive praise when behaving appropriately and at unexpected times
- Proximity
- Nonverbal cues
- Indirect statements
Power
- non-verbal cues
- proximity
- redirect to positive behaviors
- indirect statements (is this how we want others to think of us?)
- Friendly and equal, avoid power struggles (options: ______ or ______?)
- Private punishments/Public Rewards- keep their dignity
Revenge
- stay calm- maintain order with minimum restraint
- win child- find something in common
- positive praise
- take the extra time and effort to help the student
Inadequacy
- Frequent positive praise
- frequent encouragement
- very positive expectations
- "Little Extras" (assign partners or helpers, scaffold tasks, chunk down info.)
- in a rut- put them in a situation where they can see improvement, graph improvement
- Do assignments even if they are "wrong", bring it up later and we will fix it together because everything is fixable.
- Circle problems to start with and come back to check later
Cooperative Discipline
Teacher and student come up with rules. Behavior mistakes turn into learning opportunities.
Modification Plan
- Identify 1 exact behavior to extinguish
- Set Goals
- Gather Baseline Data
- Teach Corrective Behaviors
- Determine Data Source
- Collect Data
- Reward/Punish
Behavior Technique
Moving in Sequence
Stop, turn slowly and look at them, turn back and take deep breathes, turn slowly toward them and walk slowly toward them and get really close MAKE THEM UNCOMFORTABLE.

Teaching Classroom Routines and Procedures
http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/article/teaching-classroom-routines-and-procedures
Getting started...
Suggestion: start the day with a song and the students have the amount of time that the song lasts to get something done.
Question of the day to take attendance
What is you favorite color? Students say color instead of 'here'
What do you want to be when you grow up?

Introvert vs. Extrovert
Extrovert = enjoys a lot of external stimuli, is most comfortable this way
Introvert = they get the most done in solitude
*The one that talks the most is not the one with the best ideas....
Introverts do not like group work....
Introverts will not share as fast or as often as extroverts
We need to ALSO TEACH extroverts how to think in solitude. This is where deep thoughts come from.

Making Mis-Behavior Chart
Make giant table with all students names on it, you have it on clipboard
Conferences
Make sure to have clear list of things that students are doing
When are they doing this or that
Who are they talking to
Who are they not getting along with

Who are they not getting along with
Discipline Strategies
1. Positive Reinforcement
- Create steps to doing good behavior
- Make sure that each step has some instant gratification, they should be able to meet behavior goals at every step
- Give clear statements, do not say "please don't do ____"
- Say "Do this because it is a rule"
- No yelling!
- "Blurt alert!" when someone calls out when they did not raise hand
Expectations
If you think you are special and that your students are special then they WILL do better.
Expectations directly correlate to student success!
Expectations directly correlate to student success!
Responsibilities VS. Benefits
My wish for behavior is to have students recognize what they should do without question AND without prompt AND without recognition.
Who brushes their teeth? (Perhaps change this to something that you know your students do without thought because it is something they need to in order for house routine to work) Why? Does your mother have to remind you? Do you get a prize every time? (Do you think you still should?) If so, how does not doing effect yourself and others?
Create a Team
If EVERYONE does ________ then everyone gets _________.
CONSEQUENCES PLACE DECISION MAKING ON STUDENTS
negative consequences = UNCOMFORTABLE.
MAKE SURE THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CHOOSE OR LEARN ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR
TELL STUDENTS THAT THIS IS HAPPENING BECAUSE OF THEIR CHOICES

2 Types of Rules
General Rules- more encompassing
Specific Rules- to the point, only 5!
Include action words in each
Observable rules- things they can draw a picture of

Using the Restroom
- Only a certain # of times per day
- Bathroom buddy?
- Give him x number of items and then a time for it and he gets to do whatever he wants for 3-5 minutes
- A check in and out sheet, they have to write the time they leave and come back. MAYBE GIVE THEM A TOTAL AMOUNT OF MINUTES THEY CAN USE THROUGHOUT THE DAY TO HAVE "ME" TIME.
Tattling
If they NEED to tattle, they can talk into or at something.
A tattle monkey
A tattle phone
Tattle box, they do not feel like writing it down so they wont!

Management Plan
Part 1- Discipline
-Addresses how teacher manages student behavior
-Has penalties and rewards
- Tell how things are done
(THERE IS MORE BUT SHE WENT TOO FAST....)

- Est. classroom rules
- Dev. behavior management systems
- Dev strategies to manage indiv. student behavior

(THERE IS MORE BUT SHE WENT TOO FAST....)
Rules!
- When writing rules NEVER write them as "Don't ____________" Because when students hear "don't" they want to break it!
- Word rules in a way that makes them feel like it is in their control.
- "We will__________"
- When they are misbehaving trick them into fixing their own behavior. "Is that how we _______________?", "How can we do _____________ better?"
IDEA! To-Go Folders
When students get to class they will put all of the papers they need to give to a teacher in it right away, like HW or things that parents ahve signed. AND when they go home they fill it with things that need to be taken care of that night! (Maybe 2 folders, one for each time, one to go home and one to stay). So when they get to school their folders should ALL be empty.
Organzing Supplies
Clears things OFF of desk that do not need right away.
Have a trash person or a plastic bag on the end of each table.
Explain that it is for them to stay organized.
Get them to organize one thing at a time. If just filling pencil case then just have that out, if doing dividers/tabs and putting in the subject labels then JUST have that stuff out, etc.
PUT LABELS ON EVERYTHING! THEY SHOULD PUT INITIALS OR STICKERS OR SOMETHING ON ALL OF THEIR THINGS, DO NOT WANT FIGHTS!
Send home list that says things they need the first day and things they will need later and suggestions.
Let THEM set it up how they want, get to know how they stay organized, if later what they did isnt working then get them to tweek it.
I think they should Table of Contents their notes and make sure to put dates on all note pages or maybe number them.
What they learned that day pages. Maybe a separate Comp. or spiral with the table of contents. Quick equation reference and good for tests/quizes. They could even put in questionsf rom tests/quizes that they got wrong so when they study later they can go back and make sure they now know!
Put up examples for them, either put together some binders to show them or do images of them. I think that making a couple of binders and letting htem go around and see how they are put together would be great. Let them go around and see how each is set up and they can pick a way.
REMEMBER THAT SOME THINGS CAN BE SHOWN DURING OPEN NIGHT OR BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT? SO DONT WASTE CALSS TIME. But first day would be good.
REMEMBER THAT THEY DO SWTICH TO OTHER CLASSES SOMETIMES SO CHECK WITH THAT TEACHER TO SEE IF THEY LIKE IT.

Library
Library sign out and in list.
Try to put in on an excel spread sheet (or cool website kids make would be better!), this way they can search by genre, author, level. Kids can fill out summary sheets, can give ratings and can even come up with rubric for how to rate them on their own.

Supplies for the Day
Create storage bins, LITTLE ones and then have them just place all those things on top of desks, but label again! Have things that keep here at school always and things that stay home! Like dont need to take all paper home. Maybe make a list of at home supplies to keep! should just have 2 of everything! Especially keep writing stuff and paper here at school at all times.Try to get to share!
Keep some records of how much you/the class uses the supplies, try not to be wasteful!!

Getting Serious
- Establish Bathroom Time
- Pencil Sharpening? (I think each table should get their own one.
- Where to put
- "you establish my mood," tell children that how the day goes is up to them, we will always learn but the amount of freedom and fun they get to have is UP TO THEM.
"ASK 3 B4 ME"
Class Rules
If they do not make them their own rules then they will not follow them.
It may take a long time but need to establish these or you might be able to get it back!

Culture of Classroom
Get to know your students culture
- what activities do they do?
- how do they get around?
