Book Reports
Idea. Have students pair off and read their books together and then they have to give awards to one another on something...
Assessment Activity
Susie Smarty Pants and Ned Know it All. one example and one non-example
They both give answers but one it wrong. Students have to say who is correct and who is wrong and why BOTH are right/wrong.

Making stamps with the correct answer!
If you have a bunch of pink erasers left over!
Tape a problem on the front.
Cut out the answer on the back and then it is a stamp. When they think they have the write answer they stamp it and see!

Jenga
Put things on jenga pieces and kids have to do them before stacking them. Like math problems or literacy skills like spelling or defining etc.
Task Cards (center work, take a worksheet and make it mobile)
Great for kids that need to move. Could give kids options too. Extroverts need to move, introverts hate it! Make sure to cater to all learning styles and personality types.
Laminate and use for years
Great for warm-ups. Could have a bunch ready for the topics students are struggling with and you can personalize warm-ups! Have them for all subjects!

Magnetic Center!
Get cookie sheets and use them to create centers for all subjects.
Random words, students use them to practice ordering words etc.
Math, students make word sentences, create shapes etc.
Science, students get phases of the Moon and they have to order them!
Social Studies, students get the shapes of the states and they have to maker he USA
Start of Year Activity
Show students all the subjects we will be learning about this year.
Put them on big lego blocks.
Ask students what background knowledge they learned last year that will be our foundation for this unit.
Building up a tower of knowledge throughout the year!
Every time we learn something knew we add to the tower. Let the students physically do it.

Community Building
Get a bunch of objects in a bag. Toys etc.
Tell kids to relate them to their feelings about a subject. (how do you feel about math or reading?)
OR they can write it out! You can tell them to write about problem in their life, a social issue or family situation etc.
Great for ELL kids who can't write well. They can just say their thoughts.

Scratch Off!
Make your own scratch offs for activities
- Metallic acrylic paint (we used Golden Artist Colors acrylic paint in iridescent silver, $4.75, utrechtart.com)
- Liquid dish soap
- 1/4-inch-wide watercolor brush
Guessbox
Put item or concept or image etc. in a box.
Have students ask you yes or no questions (that are not "Is it a _____")
They keep asking, do not let them say what it is until you think they ALL know it.
Once some have figured it out, they ask 3 (or so) questions at a time that they know you will answer yes to (you could try 3ish that are no too I guess)
For math- put in geometric 3-D or just 2-D shapes... ENCOURAGE VOCAB. USE!! Do not answer if they do not use the correct vocabulary!

Graphs or Division or Pie Chart with plates!
Take two plates, paper plates, and pin them together, loose enough so they can spin.
You can show fractions with this.
You can give them options and then cut out parts to only reveal part of what is under it.
Use as time wheel.
Good for color wheel, only show complementary colors, or 3 in a row? Awesome for art!

4- CORNERS
Students do 4 different activities in four different corners
Show them concepts or quotes or ideas etc.
In the four corners they have to do an activity related or it can be agree, strongly agree, disagree, strongly disagree

Where Do You Stand
Line up
Ask question(s)
If strongly agree go very far forward
If neutral stay there
If disagree step back
Or ask one with different answers and they go back for one and forward for the other option

Question Spiral
Kids have questions all the time, some should wait to ask them and other should and never do!
So they should have a QUESTIONS section in their binder or a little notebook for questions specifically. They date it, say the subject and write down the question.
They can leave it on top of their desk if they want me to go through it or they can just use it to look back at the end of the unit to clarity things.
Or if they have a suggestion they can write that in and leave that out.
Or a way to teach something?
YAY FOR QUESTION SPIRALS!

Proud Work Folder
Have students create their own folders of work that they choose
Builds motivation!
Builds motivation!
Find Your Group
A way to group kids, they get a slip of paper that has something on it, they have to find others that fit and get together
Math- fractions and a ruler and a picture
Reading- synonms, timeline?
S.S.- Timeline, conecpt
Science- concepts, like the different types of motion. Or animals and they group by some common ground

Figure Out What will be Culturally Relevant to your students
Ask students to make a list of 30 things they could write about. If they get stuck, you can ask them to think about food they eat, places their family visit, have visited, or just places their family talk about, music etc. Get to know them and their interests but in a way that is different from inventories because they choose what they are interested in and then pick their favorite. They may not like food or sports but when you ask a children their favorite sport they pick something but may not actually care that much about it.
Skellzies
Write with preferably chalk and outside. Need bottle-cap or similar structured items.
1. Draw line about a foot from the 1 box.
2. First player flicks or flicks bottle-cap into "onesies" box and keeps going to "twosies" box and so on until misses. When misses, leave bottle-cap where it is and then the next player gets to go.
NOTE: If player A hits players B;s cap then Player A's cap automatically go to the box that is being aimed
3. When going for "ninesies", if land in the 4 boxes around the 9, called the 'skull', and NOT touching the 4 diagonal lines, then player loses 3 turns.
4. Once make "ninenies" then go back down to "eightsies" again and so on.
5. Once make it back down to "onesies" again then cap becomes 'poison'ness and if that cap touches another player's cap 3 times then the other players cap is out!
6. Players go up and down the numbers and the last cap standing wins!
Nim
Math and logic game. Need 21 small items (buttons). Arrange in a line, pick up 1, 2 or 3 items at a time and the GOAL is to NOT be the person to pick up the LAST button.
Bottle Music
- 20 ounce bottles
- Food coloring and numbers?
- DO RE Mi FA SO LA Ti DO
*Create & Learn!
Edible Ectoplasm
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup water
- green food coloring
Busy work- be super strict about noise level!
There is always something that needs to be done after they are done the real work. GET A BETTER LIST OF IDEAS!
Things to stimulate their brains, and even things that can teach them new things and ESPECIALLY creative outlets.
Art- empty comic strips, empty lyric page, empty music sheet, empty but structured for poetry. Have an idea box! Like Task! Talk to the Art teacher and get ideas from her. They have a list of jobs that you can have when you have an Art major, get as many busywork things as you can for students to use. Maybe cut out some out fits and give them manequins, or empty faces to put makeup on. Drawing, give them a story or a poem or have hat full of suggestions etc, weird scenarios.
Culture- have a culture of the week, highlight as much about it as you can, could be a website or just a book type thing.Videos of dances and all kinds of things can be on there. Kids can help make them!
P.E.?- come up with own game, give some cards too, come up with own sport, pull different equipment out of a hat and have to use them etc.
Reading/Writing- Paper to write a story on, give them a title and then write, a short summary and then write, a song title/lyric, a name, a picture, all kinds of things, a poem etc. Get a great reference for the books that are in your/my library so they can find everything they want.
Online gaming- see how the school feels about it and if they can keep quiet.
A small puzzle out somewhere at all times to put together.
Brain work- sudoku's, freerice.com, brainteasers, those crafts that test you, crossword puzzle (let them use the internet if you can)
